McCAW TOPS A THRILLING 2019 CARRICK GRASSTRACK CHAMPIONSHIP PREMIER CLASS

Jordan McCaw made the short trip down the road from Larne to top what was a thrilling 2019 Carrick Grasstrack Championship held in association with Suitor Autofix at McCormick’s Farm in Gleno. Those in attendance at round three witnessed some top quality grasstrack racing, particularly in the premier class which seen three race wins from three starts on the night for Glenn McCormick, fresh off some good rides at the recent British Championship round at Desertmartin.

McCaw however managed to hold onto top spot by a single point at the close of play to take his first Carrick Grasstrack Championship title ahead of McCormick. The pair certainly put on a brilliant show, dicing back and forth all night while behind them the ever-present Paul Atkinson grabbed third place to round out the Suitor Autofix Premier Class podium.

For the first time in Ireland and with the support of sponsor Cornerstone Off Road Motorcycle Academy, Carrickfergus & District Motorcycle Club were able to stage a Ladies only championship class which was really well received among the local motorcycling community. Amy Booth won seven races from eight starts to win the class ahead of Adrienne Donnelly who finished second despite missing the second championship round held in challenging conditions. Jamie Wilkin was steady throughout and completed the top three.

Trevor Calderwood & Gary Binnie certainly didn’t show their age and raced in not just the Veteran class but also in the Clubman MX1 class. The pair finished in the same order in both classes but it was Calderwood that took the spoils in the Impressive Automatics Clubman MX1 Class ahead of Binnie in second. Rhys Wilkin started the last round in third place and managed to do enough to keep third in the championship despite Karl Blair’s best efforts at the final round.

It was Richard Watt that stormed the Marina Motors sponsored Veteran Open Class with Calderwood & Binnie rounding out the top three while Jack Grills from Carnmoney stormed the Clubman MX2 Class in a similar fashion. Ian Mairs is no stranger to a Carrick Grasstrack and it showed when he finished on 130 points in second. It was another Veteran doubling up classes in the form of Davey Mulligan that stood on the last podium step in a popular third, but not more popular then when Mulligan was victorious in in the feature Robert Blair Memorial Clubman Race held at the end of the evening to close out a what was a great series of events at Gleno in recent months.

Carrickfergus & District Motorcycle Club would like to thank everyone that got involved in any way in 2019 whether you raced, spectated, sponsored or helped out with our events. It was great to be back running what we would see as our bread and butter, grasstrack racing for all ages and abilities. Until next time, keep up to date on our club social media channels and website.
