A popular former grasstrack venue off Dalway’s Bawn Road in Carrickfergus will be brought back to life for Carrickfergus & District Motorcycle Club’s eagerly anticipated evening grasstrack events in 2016. It will be the first time grasstrack racing has been staged in the town since the venue was last used for the opening round of the Watt Motorcycles Grasstrack Championship back in April 2012.
The events followed an exciting three round championship format back then and they will do the same again this year with both Adult & Youth riders getting the chance to compete in their own championship. The Youth Series will take place on Tuesday evenings and will kick off on April 26th while the Adults take centre stage on Wednesday evenings, starting the following night on April 27th.
The Youth Championship will again be open to competitors between 6 and 18 years of age competing on 50cc up to 250cc four stroke solo machines while the Adult Championship sees a new class added to the schedule.
Due to popular demand, a brand new Minibike class has been added at the expense of the quads. Minibike racing will add an exciting new dimension to the series and given problems locally of illegal riding of minibikes, the club can now provide a safe and controlled environment for these guys to race in.
Races will be kept short and sharp and the events open to all ages and abilities, however riders wishing to score points in the club championships must be a member of the Carrickfergus Club.
It looks like we are set for a fantastic season of grasstrack racing in Carrickfergus; all we need now is for the summer sunshine to return in time for April 26th! The club will confirm a number of reserve dates later in the week as backup in the event that a round of the championship is postponed due to weather.
Entries for the opening round are now available online at www.carrickfergusmcc.co.uk and riders are encouraged to take advantage of the discounted pre-entry fee in place for those that enter before the closing date. You can stay up to date on the events on the club website and social media channels in the weeks leading up to Round 1.
